Routine business including approval of minutes (proposed Bob Bennett seconded Jayne Burrows) was concluded quickly. A vote of thanks was given to club officers for their efforts during the year.

Financial report presented and accepted (proposed Simon Kerr seconded Mark Burrows)

Overall the club made a loss of £239, which was covered by existing funds. It was reported we had made an early donation of £150 to Ex Services Club to cover the use of facilities for 2011; this was made to help with their cash flow. We also purchased a secondhand digital projector for £120; this is used for training, which has been responsible for our increase in membership. We also had the club rig serviced and purchased cable and guys for field day use. Without these expenditures next year, we should break even or make a small profit. Annual subscription has been raised at £15 to include the ex-services club fee. Financial report included at Annex 2.

Annual report presented and accepted (Proposed Bob Bennett, Seconded Simon Kerr)

The secretary presented the club report; see Annex 1. Last Years Action Plan was updated as below:

Action Plan 2010

Overarching objective for the year is to provide a regular timetable of lectures/workshops/training that will sustain a club of circa 40 members, to organise field events in the summer months and to enter some HF/VHF/UHF contests.

1        Internet Publicity Bob Bennett will take on publicity role and continue as web master. Members are requested to provide articles for the news on the site. Timetable of club meetings and events will be supplied on a regular basis to Radcom and GB2RS news. Articles will be supplied for local paper and radio stations to increase public awareness.

2        Shack Equipment Now that the SGC tuner and the FT847 are working; the purchase of an FT4540AT although approved will be delayed until more use is made of the existing rigs. Antenna workshops will target getting the 80m/40m HF set up properly at the club for AFS contests. A request will be prepared for Ex Services club to use the room upstairs as a mini shack to allow on the air evenings in parallel with other meetings in the shack.

3        Training, Courses will continue in 2011 at all levels. Four tutors currently available with two others offering their services after completion of their training. John Rogers is offering training to local schools under the STEM ambassador’s scheme and would welcome help from other club members. Mike Finn will be requested to coordinate training. Clive Woodley will help with Morse Training.

Annex 1
Progress on 2010 AGM action plan.

Action Plan 2010

Overarching objective for the year was achieved by providing one lecture and one workshop each month to the 43 enrolled members. Regular training courses at all levels and two Special Event Stations were also organised. The club came fifth in Region 13 club of the year.

12    Internet Publicity Bob Bennett has continued to update the website with provided copy and pictures including Programme, Training Courses, news pages, photo gallery and the special event stations GB4BLR and GB2BOH. HARES facebook page has also been used to publicize events to club members along with email shots. More articles for the newsletter are still needed.

13    Shack Equipment The sgc tuner has been tested and its leads extended. It was used for ROTA; but a long wire needs to be mounted across the roof to use it in the shack. During the Antenna workshops a ZS6BKW was built and used for CHOTA. It could be mounted permanently at the club if suitable fixing points can be found otherwise it can be temporarily set up for contests. The 2m 70cm antenna was raised and faulty connector rectified. The FT847 was checked out by Yaesu UK and now seems to work better although no specific fault was found. The room upstairs has been used for training and if tidied up would be a useful mini shack to allow on the air evenings in parallel with other meetings in the shack. A better HF antenna is still needed. It was decided to postpone purchase of a new HF (FT450AT) until more use was made of the current transceiver.

14    Training, Courses held 3 Foundation, 2 Intermediate and 1 Advanced. We now have 3 trainers one of whom M0MPF is train the trainers qualified (M0JAV & M0LTD). Demand remains high for training in the area. A second-hand projector was purchased to help with training.

15    Timetable Events / Lectures Seven outside speakers presented talks on DXpeditions, QSL cards, Radar re-enactment, work of the RSGB, Antennas, DSTAR, GB3HT repeater, EME and SDR. These were well received but typical attendance was 6 members often with more in the bar. The programme was published in RADCOM and on RSGB news as well as on the web. Better support is needed if we are asking people to travel long distances to give a talk. Seven antenna workshops were held and proved popular additional workshops are timetabled for next year. The timetable for the next half-year is included as an appendix to this report.

16    Junksale Mark 2E0SBM collected items and organised 2 Junk Sales with limited interest but raised nearly 30 for the club, these will continue next year.

17    Special events CHOTA 11 September GB2BOH was set up as a special event station at Breedon on the Hill jointly with Leicester DX group, 78 contacts made including 8 churches and lots of fun had. ROTA 25-26 September 2010 GB4BLR was very well supported including a Saturday evening barbecue. Over 400 contacts were made, including 18 ROTA stations. BLR has been approached to agree to us setting up Shackerstone for 2011 with the possibility of a second station at Market Bosworth, CHOTA will again be supported but just as a day trip.

18    Field Days Joint meetings with LDX are again possible this summer and could include some workshops. Contest field days - a decision is needed on which ones to follow up. DRM131 is looking into a joint Leicestershire clubs field day this summer.

19    Contest the committee proposes that we enter AFS and low power field day this year. Contest coordinator needs to be appointed by committee

20    Social evenings will remain informal first Wednesday of month a joint evening with Leicester DX club.

21    HARESNET Tuesdays at 19.30 starting on HT and QSY’ing if people wish, net coordinator G4ALB appointed.

22    Lottery Grant Apply for training aids and a field kit for SES, Raynet, Field Contests (Laptop,

The article below is from The Hinckley Times 25th March 2011

Etiquette

It is important to remember that anyone may be listening including short wave listeners considering becoming amateurs. Abuse and bad language are not part of amateur radio and on-air transmissions should always be polite and respectful. It is also worth remembering that radio has no boundaries and your remarks may be heard in other countries with different cultures and beliefs. Indeed it is in being able to talk with such people that gives amateur radio the richness it enjoys.
Sadly there are those who do seem to find entertainment in disrupting other people’s conversations, playing music and being generally abusive. This kind of behaviour has no place in amateur radio. If you do overhear such material or feel it is directed at you the important thing to remember is that you must not react or respond to it. That is often what the abuser wants you to do so they can send even more abuse. Talking to an unlicensed station is a breach of your own licence and could get you a bad name or reported to the authorities as well. Simply find another channel or frequency. If it is on a calling frequency or a repeater wait a while and see if the problem has ceased. The abuser should not even know he has been heard.
Advice on many aspects of operating and ethics can be found on the RSGB web site at www.rsgb.org/operating/. It is worth reading!
Persistent abuse can be reported to the RSGB’s Amateur Radio Observation Service (AROS) but any formal action requires good evidence, dates, times, locations and recordings and will also have to take its turn in being followed up. Obviously you must not put yourself in an awkward position but AROS operates in a strictly confidential manner with RSGB headquarters at Bedford as the only contact point.

Exam Passes

We now have Phil M0VVZ, Wayne M0WRM, Vinny M0TAV,  Doug M0MDO, and Ellen who took the exam early M0HEL.

Unfortunately Kevin failed, the formulae probably spooked him again.

I am delighted, 5 out of 6 on an advanced is the best we have achieved at HARES. We are all very proud of you all.

You all made my week it feels great to have helped you on the way....

A quiet time of year but still lots being planned:

LRS are launching an updated website on March 7th

Special Event Stations & Field Days

In nearby Warwickshire Brian G8GMU and members of Coventry ARS hosted GB4WWR on February 26th to commemorate the first radar experiment 76 years ago .

March will see Jim Lee G4AEH (trustee of Castle Mead Radio in Hinckley) and Jerry Davis G3WTD (presenter on Castle Mead Radio) collaborate with HARES to put on GB0CMR for Hospitals on the air in the Hinckley Hospital a few hundred metres from the HARES shack.

June 11th is the Market Harborough Carnival where WVARS will be putting on a station in the Carnival Grounds. Visitors are more than welcome.

HARES are again planning GB2BOH for churches on the air and GB4BLR for railways on the air in September.

Special Event Station GB0BON
In June 2010 Welland Valley Amateur Radio society decided to put a special event amateur radio station on air to commemorate the battle of Naseby, that was won by Cromwell’s new model army and put an end to three years of civil war.  The station was set up at Rupert’s Viewpoint on the 20th June and attracted a number of visitors and made over 160 contacts in 8 hours including Japan in the east to the USA in the west. A full report can be found on the clubs Website, www.wvars.com/ and was also published in Radcom in August 2010.

WVARS are again running special event  station GB0BON on June 19-20 2011 to commemorate the 366th anniversary of the decisive battle of the English civil war on 14th June 1645 in the small hamlet of Naseby just south of the town of Market Harborough in Leicestershire. Thanks are due to the landowners, Naseby Battlefield Project, a charity No 1119178, for use of the land to the rear of the car park for the station and antennas.  Rupert’s Viewpoint is one of the highest vantage points in the area and was chosen by Prince Rupert because of the all-round field of view, hence it is  a superb location for a VHF and UHF station. For HF there is plenty of room to erect long wire antennas clear of trees and other obstructions.

Visitors are more than welcome to join us or if they can’t make it then please try to work us on one of the bands. All the details are on     http://www.qrz.com/db/GB0BON or http://www.wvars.com/

British inland Waterways on the air (BiWota)

Since the article in the February issue of Radcom there has been considerable interest in the waterways on the air weekend and forty amateurs are considering setting up stations. The event will be held on the weekend of the Inland Waterways Festival on Saturday 30th- Sunday 31st July 2011 with amateurs attempting to illuminate as many of the Inland Waterways as possible. The acronym for the event has been changed to BiWota to avoid confusion with Wainwrights on the Air (WOTA). The event will be run on similar lines to Railways on the Air and further details of plans will be posted on the website being set up at  http://www.biwota.org/ If you are interested in participating please contact  John Rogers M0JAV on 07836 731544 or at drm131@rsgb.org.uk  Many different types of station are proposed including special event stations at locations associated with historic water transport, boats, towpaths, lakes, reservoirs, rivers, docks, plus pedestrian and bicycle mobile and I am still hoping for a canoe or kayak to come forward. There are 349 waterways listed on  http://www.waterscape.com/      so there are plenty of other places to set up. I plan to be at the AGM on 16th April if you want to talk face to face.

Contests
DMUARC are 16th in HF AFS superleague
MMARS are 58th and WVARS are 62nd and LRS are 78th in 80m club calls

Collaboration between groups in Leicestershire.
The first issue of the  list of speakers in clubs has been reported as useful by club secretaries. On May 16th WVARS visiting to the Kettering Club. HARES and LDX meet jointly for a social evening on the first Wednesday of each month.

Issues
Problems with complaints about poor use of GB3CF continue, but active campaigning has discouraged some individuals. HARES had a soapbox forum addressing this issue which allowed members to express their frustration with people keying up over their transmissions even during contests and suggested how they should avoid escalating the problem. Foundation and Intermediate licence holders have been encouraged to use the repeater with help from full licence holders when the jokes start about their cornflake packet licences. Some illegal users have been traced and discouraged from continuing.

RSGB Support
M0JAV is giving talks on SDR to Lincoln Radio Club on 23 March and to LDARC on May 24th and WVARS on October 17th(tbc). Regular contact maintained with HARES and LDX as I attend most of their meetings as a member.
I will be visiting LRS on March 28th, and MMARS on March 18th. The other groups in leicestershire do not have regular meetings (NSCARS, LRG, DMUARS)

Denby Dale Amateur Radio Society will be operating GB200HNC from Tunnel End, Marsden, near Huddersfield over the weekend of April 2nd and 3rd 2011. The event, organised by British Waterways, is to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the opening of Standedge Tunnel on April 4th 1811. The tunnel is the highest, longest and deepest canal tunnel in the UK, stretching for 5,029 metres (3.25 miles) through hard millstone grit. An engineering marvel worked on by Thomas Telford, the tunnel runs from Marsden in Yorkshire through to Diggle in Lancashire. Reopened in 2001 after a 20 year restoration programme, the Standedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre sits on the banks of the historic Huddersfield Narrow Canal, a waterway of startling contrasts, from tranquil countryside to dramatic mills.

The event is a real family weekend featuring tunnel “legging”, craft fare, canal craft demonstrations and much, much more and will be open from 10am to 4pm each day.

DDARS have obtained the SPECIAL, special call sign GB200HNC, Golf Bravo Two Hundred Huddersfield Narrow Canal and will be operating on all HF bands over the whole weekend. The station will be located on the first floor of the Visitor Centre in the Thomas Bourne room. Loc: IO93AO, WAB SE01

12    Shack Equipment The sgc tuner has been tested and its leads extended.

13    Training, Courses held 3 Foundation, 2 Intermediate and 1 Advanced. We now have 3 trainers one of whom M0MPF is train the trainers qualified (M0JAV & M0LTD). Demand remains high for training in the area. A second-hand projector was purchased to help with training.

14    Timetable Events / Lectures Seven outside speakers presented talks on DXpeditions, QSL cards, Radar re-enactment, work of the RSGB, Antennas, DSTAR, GB3HT repeater, EME and SDR.
