CASTLE MEAD RADIO – FACTS AND FIGURES

Castle Mead Radio is Britain’s smallest hospital radio station

The station began its broadcasts twenty one years ago from a broom cupboard

Castle Mead Radio began broadcasting to Hinckley & District Hospital on Saturday 10th November 1990 at 11.am.

It broadcasts to the patients and staff of Hinckley & District Hospital, and the Castle Mead Medical Centre.

Its current studio suite was opened in 1994

The station broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with around 30 hours a week of live programmes.

It’s staffed totally by volunteers who present programs and help run the station on a daily basis.

Castle Mead Radio has been nominated in two categories (station promotion and best specialist music programme) for the National Hospital Radio Awards which will be handed out at the HBA conference on Saturday 26th March

HOSPITAL BROADCASTING WEEK – FACTS AND FIGURES

 Hospital broadcasting, also known as hospital radio, is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year.

The first station started in 1926 in York

Hospital radio stations are run by volunteers

Many nationally known broadcasters began their careers in Hospital Radio

To support Hospital Broadcasting Week GB0CMR is one of several special event stations on air until 3rd of April.

The Hospital Broadcasting Association (HBA), more formally known as the National Association of Hospital Broadcasting Organisations (NAHBO) is the national charity that supports and promotes Hospital Broadcasting in the UK.  It has over 200 member stations

The HBA Annual Conference, is being held from 25th - 27th March at Hollingbourne near Maidstone
